This Privacy Policy covers aftermatters.co.nz and all products and services offered under the After Matters brand, including but not limited to The Lighthouse. Where a specific product has its own additional privacy terms, those apply alongside this policy, not instead of it.

Who We Are

After Matters ("we," "us," "our") is a New Zealand-based bereavement aftercare and support brand, operating aftermatters.co.nz and any associated products, tools, or content.

What Information We Collect

Depending on how you interact with us, we may collect:

General website use:

  • Basic technical information such as browser type and general location

  • Name and email address

If you purchase a product (e.g. The Lighthouse):

  • Name and email address

  • Payment information (processed directly by our payment provider - we do not store full card details)

  • If a purchase is made as a gift: the recipient's name and email address

  • Whatever information you choose to share with us

Important note on information about deceased people: The Privacy Act 2020 generally does not apply to information about deceased individuals. However, any information you provide about a person who has died is being provided by you, a living person, and information that identifies you in connection with that person is still covered by this policy.

Why We Collect It

We collect information to:

  • Provide the content, guides, and products you've requested or purchased

  • Communicate with you, including order confirmations and any updates you've opted into

  • Respond to enquiries and provide support

  • Improve our website, content, and offerings over time

  • Meet our legal and accounting obligations

We only collect what we need for these purposes, and we don't use your information beyond what's described here without telling you first

Who We Share Information With

We share information only where necessary to operate, including with:

  • Systeme.io - platform provider for our products, including The Lighthouse

  • Stripe - payment processor

  • Cloudflare - website infrastructure and email routing

  • Resend - if used for email communications

We do not sell your personal information to anyone, for any reason, under any circumstances.

Overseas storage: Some of the services above may store or process information outside New Zealand. Under the Privacy Act 2020, we take reasonable steps to ensure any overseas recipient of your information is subject to comparable privacy protections, or is otherwise required to protect it appropriately.

How we protect your information

We take reasonable security measures to protect the personal information we hold, including relying on the security measures of reputable third-party providers for payment and platform data. No online system is completely secure, but we work to keep your information as safe as reasonably possible.

If a privacy breach occurs that is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, as required under the Privacy Act 2020.

How Long We Keep Your Information

We keep your information for as long as necessary to provide our services, meet legal and accounting obligations, and resolve any disputes. If you'd like your information deleted and there's no legal reason we need to retain it, contact us at care@aftermatters.co.nz.

Your Rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:

  • Ask us what personal information we hold about you

  • Ask us to correct any information that is wrong

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your personal information and we haven't resolved it, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.

Marketing Communications

If you've opted in to receive updates, guides, or other communications from us, you can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any email, or by contacting us directly. We do not send unsolicited marketing emails, and we do not share your email address with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

Children's Privacy

After Matters and its products are intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children. Some of our content provides guidance for adults supporting grieving children, but this does not involve collecting personal information about those children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time as our brand, products, and tools evolve. The "last updated" date at the top will reflect any changes. Significant changes will be communicated where appropriate.
